Social Environments, Community Development and Social Sustainability

A focus topic of the Institute of Diversity and Social Integration

Population growth, climate change and ongoing urbanisation are shaping the development of communities and cities. In addition, there are tensions in social structures due to segregation and gentrification. In order to meet these challenges, in-depth knowledge and professional, transdisciplinary and participatory knowledge are required.

The focus topic Social Environments, Community Development and Social Sustainability combines the theoretical and methodological traditions of community work with socio-cultural animation and social urban development, as well as community and neighbourhood development, with a particular emphasis on social sustainability and participatory approaches. Attention is focused on social environments as a whole and on the groups of addressees from politics, business and civil society who are active in them. Their potential must be stimulated, preventively supported and actively promoted.
