Competence Centre for Biocatalysis

Pompeu et al. ACS Catalysis 3, 2376 (2013)

Save the date!

The 3rd Industrial Biocatalysis Symposium was rescheduled and will take place on June 10th, 2021.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the ZHAW in Wädenswil!

The Competence Center for Biocatalysis (CCBIO) at the ZHAW promotes biocatalysis as a complementary method to classic organic synthesis and aims to help bridge the gap between academic laboratories and the production plant. By connecting relevant research competencies CCBIO strives to develop a comprehensive biocatalytic toolbox consisting of enzyme libraries and methods, which will facilitate the development of biocatalytic and biosynthetic processes for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

Biocatalysis enables the sustainable production of chiral and highly functionalized compounds for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Recent key advances in DNA sequencing, gene synthesis and data analysis are now enabling scientists to tailor biocatalyst according to industrial needs and to reorganize enzymes into new biosynthetic pathways. This progress fuels the so-called «third wave of biocatalysis»1 and promises to unlock hitherto inaccessible enzyme activities for industrial biocatalysis and engineer microbial and fungal strains for the production of novel asset molecules.

Biocatalysis - Innovation in Application and Education

CCBIO leads the network project «Innovation in Biocatalysis: A toolbox for sustainable bio-based production».

The program is supported by project contributions from the Swiss Higher Education Council. In case of two calls - «Research Projects» and «Curricular Elements» -projects have been selected for funding. A third call  «Sustainability» opened in November 2019.

Second Network Meeting «Innovation in Biocatalysis»

The 2nd Network Meeting „Innovation in Biocatalysis” took place on October 17th, 2019 at the ZHAW Wädenswil (closed format).
