Spatiotemporal GIS for ecological monitoring
The recurrent collection of geodata within the framework of monitoring programmes is essential for an understanding of ecological processes. The Research Group for Geoinformatics combines mobile GIS applications with drone-based close-range remote sensing systems for ecological monitoring purposes, with a focus on developing highly flexible and semi-automated procedures for the collection, enhancement and evaluation of spatiotemporal geodata.
Spatiotemporal decision support systems
Geoinformation technology is increasingly being used for non-traditional applications outside the field of GIS. The Research Group for Geoinformatics is therefore working to develop accessible and customised planning and decision support systems which allow ecological and socioeconomic geodata to be put to efficient and effective use, combining GIS technologies with databases and visualisation tools.

Spatiotemporal analysis and modelling
Ever-increasing volumes of spatiotemporal data mean that new and purpose-developed analysis tools are needed, e.g. for spatiotemporal multicriteria analysis (wind turbine site identification) and computational movement analysis (ungulates in their habitats). These tools combine GIS, data mining, statistical and information visualisation approaches.
