ZHAW sustainable Lunch: Shaping Transformation Processes Democratically

Transformation processes are necessary to face the so-called "Grand Challenges". How can these be shaped fairly and why are they politically contentious? Florian Roth from the Center of Corporate Responsibility gives this lecture in the context of the Sustainability Day @ SML.

The consequences of climate change, loss of biodiversity, digital transformation, political polarisation, migration and ageing - politics and society are struggling with very different, but often directly related challenges. Possible solutions for the so-called "grand challenges" are just as complex as the underlying problem drivers. In this context, there is often talk of the need for transformation processes. Why are these transformation processes often so politically contested when the goals such as sustainability and resource conservation are actually rather uncontroversial? Are our political institutions capable of shaping the upcoming transformation processes quickly and fairly at the same time? And what contribution can technological innovations make to meeting the "Grand Challenges"? Dr. Florian Roth from the Center for Corporate Responsibility will address these and other questions and provide insights into current research results, including from the EU project RRI Leaders, which examines innovation and transformation processes in different political and cultural contexts and tests new forms of democratic participation.
