At the Institute of Computational Physics (ICP), a team of physicists, mathematicians and engineers works on applying methods and results from basic research to problem areas in industry. Within the Research Group Electrochemical Cells & Energy Systems we are looking for a highly motivated candidate as:

Research Assistant / Doctoral Researcher for modelling and simulation of organic redox-flow batteries

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop a mathematical description of the transport and reaction processes of an organic redox-flow battery
  • Modelling of transport through nanostructured membranes
  • Modelling of the non-Newtonian flow behavior of ionic polymers
  • Validation of the model by comparison to measurement data of organic RFBs
  • Work out design recommendations for the organic RFBs of an industrial project partner

For a successful application you need a Master’s degree in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering and first research experience. Mathematical skills are important, for example, in the field of partial differential equations and numerical modeling. Experience in multiphysics modeling and simulation are helpful. Interest in energy conversion and storage devices like electrochemical cells is expected.
The recruited researcher will have the opportunity to work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team of 15 postgraduates, based at universities and industrial firms throughout Europe. She/he will gain a unique skill-set comprising electrochemistry, material science and cell design/ engineering, as well as an overview of different RFB technologies and their implementation at prototype level. She/he is expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and to disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. The position is limited to 36 months.
As the subproject is fully funded by Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Training Network “FlowCamp” the applicant must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies etc) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the past three years.
