Terms of employment

Our university is a state institution of higher education which forms part of the Zurich Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts (ZFH). Terms of employment at the ZHAW are governed by the Canton of Zurich’s personnel law.

The ZHAW has a position-related salary system which is based on the Canton of Zurich salary system. Within the established legal framework (personnel law and universities of applied sciences law and any regulations derived from these laws), each position is linked to a salary class. A salary class consists of 29 salary levels and two entry levels. When you join the ZHAW, your salary is assigned to a specific salary level within a salary class on the basis of your education, experience and competences. The Government Council of the Canton of Zurich sets a percentage quota for individual salary increases each year.

Pension fund

ZHAW staff members are insured with the Beamtenversicherungskasse (BVK) of the Canton of Zurich. The BVK is a private foundation and the obligatory pension scheme for people employed by the Canton of Zurich. All employees whose annual salary exceeds the minimum annual amount of CHF 21,150.-- (as of 01.01.2015) are automatically members of this pension fund. BVK contributions are financed by the ZHAW (60%) and the employee (40%). ZHAW staff members can opt for retirement between the ages of 60 and 65. The BVK pension scheme is very employee-friendly, and its performance clearly surpasses the legal minimum.
