Registration and deadlines for the BSc in Midwifery

Detailed administrative information on the bachelor degree programme in Midwifery at a glance.

Entry requirements

Applicants are admitted to this degree programme if they meet the admission requirements in accordance with Swiss federal and cantonal law.

In addition to a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate, Federal Specialised Baccalaureate or academic Baccalaureate, applicants are required to provide evidence of professional experience of no less than one year, which must be related to the discipline. For the degree programme in Midwifery, this includes additional modules for at least 12 months, which must be completed before (additional module A = two months) and after (additional module C = 10 months) the regular study programme.

Candidates with a professional diploma but no FVB do not meet the school's formal admission requirements. They will first have to complete a Baccalaureate or an FVB (for more information, please refer to the vocational college in your area or a career counselling service).

It is important to keep in mind that the additional module A must have been completed no more than five years prior to the beginning of the programme. If this time is exceeded, the qualification is considered to have expired and only the head of the programme can decide on exceptions to this rule. Federal diplomas do not expire.

Knowledge of English

Freshers need to have good knowledge of English at level B2-C1 according to the European Framework of Reference (CEFR) which corresponds to a very good Cambridge First Certificate in English (grade A) or a good Certificate in Advanced English (grade C). Students are expected to read English academic texts (abstracts, reports, studies) and follow the classes in English. Students who fail to meet these basic language requirements are strongly recommended to attend a language course prior to the beginning of the programme or while completing the programme.

Mandatory vaccinations

In preparing for a career in the health professions, follow these general rules. Health care professionals in Switzerland are vaccinated against certain diseases (if natural immunity does not already exist).

Certain vaccinations are mandatory for being fully admitted to the degree programme in Midwifery at the ZHAW School of Health Sciences.

Students who are not vaccinated may not be guaranteed to receive a degree, since clinical placement providers only accept students with the recommended protective vaccinations.

Admission procedures

Admission to the Bachelor’s degree programme in Midwifery is restricted to 90 places a year. All prospective students have to undergo a fee-based aptitude test that determines the final admission decision.

Aptitude test and interview

After the Programme Secretariat has reviewed the formal admission requirements, the applicants undergo a two-part, fee-based aptitude test consisting of:

Part 1:

  • Cognitive assessment (120 minutes)
The results from Part 1 will determine admission to Part 2.

Part 2:

  • The oral part of the aptitude tests consists of a 30-minute individual interview. During the interview, applicants are required to answer questions about their personal and social competence and on the occupational profile of midwives.

The final admission decision will be taken based on the results the applicants have reached in the aptitude test.

Applicants who fail the aptitude test can retake it once.

If you need special arrangements for the aptitude test to compensate for a disability or chronic illness, please contact the office for an accessible study and work environment (“Fachstelle Hindernisfreies Studieren und Arbeiten”) by the registration deadline for the aptitude test: diversity.gesundheit@zhaw.ch.

Enrolment

After passing the aptitude test, successful applicants will receive the documents for enrolment at the ZHAW from the Programme Secretariat by post.

“During the course of my studies at ZHAW, I learnt how to support couples who wish to have children and help them through pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. This knowledge enables me to be supportive and understand the complexities in difficult situations - I don't know any other profession that offers as much life as the job of a midwife.”
