Institute of Nursing

Today’s and tomorrow’s healthcare system requires registered nurses with in-depth specialist knowledge.

Studying for a degree

The Institute of Nursing offers an internationally recognised, scientifically sound and practice-oriented bachelor degree programme as well as an international master degree programme immediately following completion of the undergraduate programme.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The full-time study programme takes three years to complete for a Bachelor of Science ZHAW (University of Applied Sciences) in Occupational Therapy. Two-thirds of the studies take place at ZHAW, the remaining one-third is in the form of clinical placements at institutions in the healthcare sector.

The study programme in Nursing at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences covers all aspects of care. We have consciously aimed at a global orientation of the course contents. The basic knowledge conveyed in the three-year study programme is demanding and broad.

The degree course comprises compulsory and elective course modules. The forms of teaching consist of lectures, studying in small groups and practical training sequences.

Bachelor of Science for Registered Nurses

The School of Health Sciences at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences offers a three-year full-time undergraduate degree programme in Nursing (180 ECTS credits) and a four-semester Bachelor study programme for registered nurses (90 ECTS credits). Registered nurses can get credit for their already acquired knowledge and complete the Bachelor degree programme in Nursing as a part-time student. The study programme prepares students for an academic career or a new position in the health care system and encourages and supports international exchange.

Master of Science in Nursing

The objective of the Master of Science in Nursing is to train expert APN. During their studies, graduates expand their awareness and knowledge of clinical practice, enhance their knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice and further their professional career in research and development.

Continuing education

We offer continuing education programmes in the fields of Gerontological Nursing, Oncological Nursing, Paediatric Nursing as well as Patient and Family Education. The continuing education programmes are based on two competency models: CanMEDS role model (2005) and Advanced Nursing Practice: A National Framework (2008), published by the Canadian Nurses Association. This nursing leadership competency model describes four key competencies which are important for the practice of advanced nursing practice. These include clinical competencies, training, counselling and collaboration competencies, leadership competencies, and research application competencies

Modular course

The modular structure of our continuing education allows for a lot of flexibility with regard to the content and time planning of your continuing education.

Research

The Nursing Science Research Unit promotes clinical nursing practice through research projects, counselling and training, whereby questions of the daily nursing routine provide the direction of future scientific activity. It focuses on acute-critical care, community-based, integrated care (home care nursing “Spitex”), nursing interventions as part of rehabilitation, the inclusion of families and social networks (family nursing) and social conditions for the quality and professionalisation of nursing practice. The researchers develop projects in close collaboration with institutions in the healthcare system, look for innovative solutions and accompany evaluations with scientific methods.

Our research team consists of scientifically trained and highly experienced nurses who use a wide range of quantitative and qualitative procedures in their projects. The Nursing Science Research Unit's most important practice partners and largest financial contributors are institutions in the healthcare system and foundations as well as cantonal and municipal administrations.

Services

Our institute offers services for public health institutions and for private companies in the fields of training, counselling and development in nursing.

The term training is understood to mean in-house training or keynote speeches on current topics of nursing. Your project-specific and professional questions in dealing with innovations are the focus of our counselling service. Quality-related topics can include the development of evidence-based nursing standards or internal processes and procedures drawing on current scientific findings in nursing research and development as well as a broad repertoire of methods and theories from teaching and research.
