Project example: RACE 2050

Responsible innovation Agenda for Competitive European transport industries up to 2050

The aim of the “RACE 2050” EU project is to develop both future scenarios of Eu-ropean transport and of the transport industry and to compile significant success factors for sustainable growth by 2050.

As part of the project, the Institute of Sustainable Development (INE) first recorded and evaluated different options and visions. With the help of experts from politics, science and the transport industry, these options and future scenarios were discussed. In this way, it was possible to develop viable and long-term concepts for a sustainable transport industry.

Comprehensive analysis

Current observable phenomena from earlier future studies were also incorporated into the analysis. They give an initial indication of possible influential factors to which the transport industry will be subjected in the future. Furthermore, current political processes, technologies, environmental aspects and geopolitical trends were analysed in order to develop possible future scenarios for the competitiveness and growth of the European transport industry.

Framework conditions for competitiveness

In the RACE 2050 project, the INE identified long-term framework conditions for the European transport sector and investigated its competitiveness.

The current market position of the European transport sector was analysed with regard to economic key indicators, such as the development of prices, customers, the labour market, investments and political framework conditions.

The most important indicators related to the competitiveness of the transport sector were worked out while taking into consideration sustainability aspects. Areas with competitive advantages and disadvantages were identified. Challenges and expected trends that will have an influence on the transport sector were also considered.
