WiMAX

Background

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a synonym for the standard IEEE 802.16. With this technology wide-band entrances for example to the Internet are offered. Different companies develop this system.

WiMAX is used for fix and mobile purposes. It is discussed as an alternative to UMTS. The supplying radius of a basis station in urban environment is usually between 2 and 3 kilometers. In laboratory tests a  range of 50 km and a data transfer rate of up to 108 Mbit/s was possible. All users have to divide the available bandwidth like in UMTS.
