Towards Smart Sustainable Cities
Urban habitats play not only in the implementation of the Energy Strategy 2050 («energy transition») a key role, but in general in addressing the grand challenges of the 21st century. On the one hand the energy consumption of cities continues to increase as a result of urbanization, one of the most important global trends. On the other hand, cities have several ways to actively promote the energy transition through their existing infrastructures, e.g. by promoting the implementation of energy efficiency measures, renewable energy and smart grids. In addition, cities can set an important impulse through their exemplary role not only in the field of energy, but also in mobility, waste and water management, site development or the renovation of buildings. Cities are closely related to and dependent on the economy and population. They can create framework conditions that motivate the actors either to energy efficiency or sufficiency.
The concepts on Smart Cities entail many opportunities to create intelligent networking of action areas in order to improve conditions for sustainable city development. With integrated approaches the quality of life of city residents shall be increased and the involvement of relevant stakeholders enabled. At the same time a reduction of energy and resource consumption in cities is sought.
In the context of the Expo 2017, a delegation of researchers from Higher Research Institutions in Switzerland visited Kazakhstan with a view to exchange insights, share ideas, and discuss collaboration opportunities and joint projects with their colleagues in Kazakhstan and from other regions of the world.
