Resilience Assessment

A Quantitative Approach for Applied Resilience Assessment Audits of Smart Systems

Interconnected infrastructural systems are important for economy and viability of highly developed societies. Such smart systems are designed to be resilient, i.e. to continue operation despite disturbances. However, the common system assessment approaches, (e.g., following risk management) are reaching their limits in methodology and practical feasibility. On the other hand, resilience analysis is in its beginnings and thus a commonly accepted resilience metric is missed.
The major innovation of INE is to provide a practical and industry-related measurement of technical systems. This measure is the Resilience Priority Value REPV = LI, where actions and processes are quantified by their compliance level L in order to characterise their technological maturity. In this regard, actors are carriers of resilience capabilities characterised by their impact on recovery potential I of the system, which are associated with the ability to respond, monitor, learn, and to anticipate developments. All assessments use ordinal scales from “1” worst to “10” best.
This metric is then applied to quantify Use Case Diagrams which are used for system modelling purposes. The result is the overall system REPV.
The design of a Semi-automated Resilience Assessment Audit software tool uses this concept.
