April 2024 - Welcome to Jan Verstockt

Welcome to Jan Verstockt, PhD student at the University of Antwerp in Belgium who is visiting us for one month and will collaborate with the SMS team in the field of activ thermal imaging.

We are really happy you are here helping us re-activating our projects in medical thermal imaging!

March 2024 - Nanolockin partners with VITROCELL

We are really proud that our spin-off company Nanolockin GmbH has partnered with VITROCELL to develop the CalorQuanti, an innovative optical dosimetry tool for real-time depositing monitoring. The device was presented this month at the SOT in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Kudos to the NanoLockin team!

March 2024 - Publication in Skin Research and Technology

Congratulation to Dardan Bajrami who is authoring his first publication! (in the framework of his PhD). In this study, Dardan is investigating the thermal diffusivity of the human skin in vivo. The article is open access and accessible here.

February 2024 - And the winner is...

November 2023 - Outstanding Co-op Employer Award for ZHAW School of Engineering

We are thrilled to announce that the ZHAW School of Engineering has been honored with the Outstanding Co-op Employer Award for 2023 by Northeastern University College of Engineering. It brings us immense joy to consistently welcome Huskies for their co-op experiences in our laboratory.

The dedication and skills demonstrated by these students make them invaluable assets to our Sensors and Measuring Systems group. We deeply appreciate their contributions and look forward to fostering further collaborations with Northeastern University in the future. This recognition is a testament to the strong partnership between our institutions and the success of our shared commitment to experiential education.

November 2023 - Swiss Biodesign Summer school 2024 registration are open!

This 6 ECTS- and Triple-E Award winning program is modelled on the pioneering Stanford Biodesign training to identify major market opportunities and invent high potential digital health solutions (e.g. patient apps or DTx) or medical devices (e.g. implants).

It provides hands-on experience in shadowing patients and physicians, develop a compelling product idea and seed-stage business plan. Highly motivated students will benefit from interdisciplinary project groups with engineering/IT, healthcare and business student members and extensive coaching by industry specialists.

For MSE students, this course is a 6 ECTS EVA module taking place in July 2024.

October 2022 - Visit of Polytech Marseille

It was a great pleasure to visit my alma mater "Polytech Marseille" (formerly ESIL) on the beatiful campus of Luminy (check the pictures attached) and to disscuss with Prof. Candoni, head of the Biomedical Engieering Department potential cooperation.

Do you know that ZHAW School of Engineering has an agreement with Polytech Marseille? A great opportunity for ZHAW MSE students in Medical Engieering to spend one semester there and enjoy the "Massilian sharkies" way of life :-)

April 2022 - Exciting talk from Prof. Matoori from University of Montréal

Thanks again to Prof. Matoori who gave a very exciting talk entitled "Liposomal delivery systems for diagnostics: the need for portable fluorometers" (and filled up our lab reserve in maple syrup!). 

It was a great opportunity to learn about the topic and brainstorm about future collaborations.

February 2022 - New publication in IEEE TBME

Would you like to monitor sweat glands activity non contact? Quantify sweat rate of individual sweat glands? Follow their dynamics/pulsation?

February 2022 - Partnership with Polytech Marseille

I was delighted to learn that ZHAW School of Engineering and my Alma Mater Polytech Marseille (part of Aix-Marseille University) are now official partners! I am looking forward to collaborations and students exchange. A big thank to those at ZHAW SoE and Polytech Marseille who made it possible.

December 2021 - New publication

I am proud to say that there is a bit of the Sensors and Measuring Systems technology inside this article :-) In particular, the work of Raphael Hagen and Daniel Fehr. Congrats to you too guys!

December 2021 - The spin-off NanoLockin is moving to its new office in Fribourg

NanoLockin moved into its new office at the Colab Fribourg. This will support the company growth and will allow the best start in 2022.

NanoLockin develops instruments based on active thermography for the reliable and reproducible analysis of nanoparticle systems. Based on the recorded heat signature, dispersed carbon and metallic particles can be quantified or the thickness of thin layers can be analysed.Furthermore, the distribution of the particles in the films can be analysed or the reproducibility of the particle synthesis can be checked.

The company was founded in 2018 as spin-off from the ZHAW and the Adolphe Merkle Institute in Fribourg.

December 2021 - SNSF News

Our collaboration with the ETH Zurich (group of Prof. Dr. med. Michael Detmar) and the Zurich University Hospital (Prof. Dr. med. Nicole Lindenblatt) made it to SNSF News!

It was a great pleasure to participate to this exciting project and we are really happy we could bring our engineering expertise and build the device.

October 2021 - Welcome to Maddy

We are really happy to welcome Madeleine DeBrosse at the Sensors and Measuring Systems Group. Maddy is a PhD student at the University of Cincinnati at the Novel Devices Lab lead by Dr. Heikenfeld. She will be with us for several weeks working in the field of wearable sweat sensors. We are already looking forward interesting results.

July 2021 - Picking up the Calorsito device

We could successfully pick up a Calorsito device in Fribourg produced by the startup company NanoLockin. We got our device from the CEO himself! NanoLockin is a startup developing and commercializing hightech instruments for the detection and characterization of nanoparticles in complex environements. The company is a spin-off from the Adolphe Merkle Institute and ZHAW School of Engineering.

June 2021 - Congratulation to Claudio Malnati for publishing his Master thesis!

The manuscript entitled "Modeling Stratum Corneum Swelling for the Optimization of Electrode-Based Skin Hydration Sensors" has been accepted for publication in Sensors (MDPI). The publication can be accessed here.
