Building for the future

The dynamic development of the ZHAW is reflected in the construction projects at its various locations across the canton of Zurich.

In Winterthur, construction activity focused on its Campus Stadt-Mitte in the city centre. The building envelope for the Adeline Favre House on Katharina Sulzer Platz was completed at the beginning of 2019 and a topping-out ceremony was held, marking an important milestone for the new training centre for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, health promotion and prevention, midwifery and nursing. The School of Health Professions and its approximately 1,700 students will move into the building in summer 2020.

On the same campus, the civil engineering studies programme will move into the new building Hall 141 at the beginning of 2020, bringing together the entire School of Architecture, Design and Civil Engineering under one roof. The mixed-use building, which is funded by the Stiftung Abendrot foundation, features classrooms, a large laboratory hall, offices and student workstations. After the civil engineering programme moves out, Hall 166/167 will then be used for teaching purposes by the School of Management and Law. The School of Engineering is also using Hall 118 at nearby Lagerplatz. Beginning in 2021, the ZHAW will rent additional space in the planned extension of that building. What will be exceptional about this extension is that it will be constructed using at least 80 per cent recycled materials.

Consolidating presence at Campus St. Georgen Platz

In November 2019, the School of Management and Law moved into six floors of the Roter Turm tower, replacing its location in Stadthausstrasse. This represents another step for the ZHAW in its efforts to consolidate its presence at its Campus St. Georgen Platz. The Roter Turm tower will also start providing a public catering facility for staff, students and other tenants as well as users of the surrounding properties beginning in April 2020. The catering company SV Group AG has been commissioned by the ZHAW to run this facility.

Expanding Campus Reidbach in Wädenswil

The increased space requirements of the School of Life Sciences and Facility Management will be met by a new laboratory building at Campus Reidbach. Construction work began in 2019 with the demolition of an apartment building on the site and the excavation of the three basement floors. The building is expected to be ready for occupation by 2023.
