Why Marilyn Monroe is a Polish baritone – television voice-over in Central Europe
20. Februar 2019
Talk by Prof. Łukasz Bogucki, Head of the Institute of English Studies, University of Lodz
In the 1980s, Communist states gained access to American movies through VHS copies with voiceover translations. In the age of Netflix, many former Soviet bloc countries, most of them now in the EU, have retained this modality of audiovisual transfer. The talk sheds some light on voiceover and investigates the reasons for its popularity, together with the results of a study of audience preferences.
Łukasz Bogucki has been Director of the Institute of English Studies at the University of Łódź since 2012. He has published widely on AVT theory and co-edits Łódź Studies in Language. (Peter Lang).
