Webinar: EU ETS and the Electricity Sector – Fuel Switching in Germany and Poland

At this webinar on Zoom we will look at the potential for switching from coal to less intensive fuels in the Polish and German electricity sector.

EU ETS and the Electricity Sector: Fuel Switching in Germany and Poland

2019 was an exceptional year for EU ETS: the price for an allowance temporarily reached almost 30 € - the highest price level since 2006 – and emissions in Europe fell by almost 9 and in Germany by 14 per cent, mostly driven by emission reductions in the power sector. We will look at the potential for switching from coal to less intensive fuels in the Polish and German electricity sector and discuss the impact of the carbon price on fuel switching in these countries. Based on observed prices and generation, we discuss the implications for the functioning and design of carbon and electricity markets.
