Datalab: Citizen Science: What is it exactly and what are the challenges?
Citizen science is research carried out with the help or entirely by interested laypersons. For example, volunteers analyze thousands of galaxy images online, conduct local monitoring of plants year after year, transcribe love letters from World War II, or are involved in the entire development process for new medical therapies. While Switzerland has a long history with naturalists and biodiversity monitorings, the applications of digital tools and platforms for analyzing large data sets with a citizen science approach has just started here. In this presentation (including some interactive parts) you will learn what citizen science exactly is and what the chances and challenges are. You will get to know some projects in more detail and hear where to find guidelines and tools for citizen science.
