Member States endorse Commission’s proposal to lower the maximum residue levels of particularly hazardous pesticides

Member States have endorsed the Commission’s proposal to lower the maximum residues levels (MRLs) of three particularly hazardous pesticides - carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl - which are not allowed for use in the EU, but still authorised in some third countries.

The new Regulation will lower the existing MRLs to the lowest level that can be measured with newest technology, having an impact on imported food and feed. Food business operators will be given a 6 month phase-out period to adapt to the new rules, after which these new MRLs will apply in any food or feed product for the EU market. Moreover, a transitional arrangement will apply to products already on the market before the entry into force of the new Regulation only where evidence demonstrates that a high level of consumer protection is maintained.

The European Parliament and Council now have a two-month scrutiny period to examine the proposal. In the absence of any objection from the other institutions, the Commission will adopt the Regulation in July 2026.
