FAO: Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction

Following the request of the 26th Session of its Committee on Agriculture (COAG), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction (CoC). The CoC was endorsed by the FAO Conference during its 42nd Session on 15 June 2021.

The CoC lays down a set of voluntary, internationally recognized, nationally adaptable actions and measures that different stakeholders (countries, national and sub-national authorities, food supply chain actors, the private sector, producer organizations, civil society organizations, academic and research institutions) can adopt in order to achieve food loss and waste reduction while promoting sustainable and inclusive agro-food systems. The CoC also presents guiding principles that should be followed in implementing these actions and measures, as well as the role that FAO and other stakeholders will be expected to play in supporting its implementation.

The CoC was developed through an inclusive process, by running extensive consultations with several actors, amongst which the European Commission.
