Since 2013 the Institute of Applied Information Technology has teamed up with five other institutes from three departments to establish one of the first interdisciplinary Data Science Centers in Europe – the ZHAW Datalab (www.zhaw.ch/datalab). It runs a focus area on deep learning methodology, spanning several research groups, with several multi-year research projects on the applicability of reinforcement learning to areas from game playing to home automation.

Within the Research Group Information Engineering of the Institute of Applied Information Technology (www.zhaw.ch/init), we are looking for a highly motivated and excellent candidate as:

Research Assistant or PhD candidate in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning (Information Engineering Group)

Your responsibilities:
•    Contribute to research projects in the area of deep neural networks, specifically reinforcement learning
•    Become an expert in the fields of deep learning / reinforcement learning, with a track record of published own research results and successful technology transfer

The successful candidate has finished a Master’s degree in computer science at a research university or a university of applied sciences within the last two years. He or she must have reliable experience in deep neural networks (e.g., done coursework and own experimentation, ideally proven by successful projects or publications). We expect a good command as well as a passion for programming, ideally in python using TensorFlow. Good communication skills in English and in German are an asset for the work in multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate has an affinity to related fields in Information Engineering, such as Big Data and Information Retrieval, and will demonstrate an understanding of the academic, industry, and technology landscape, identify unsolved problems and propose novel ideas for future activities. Particular emphasis is given to developing prototypes, experimenting hands-on with data, and scientific evaluation and publication of results.
