Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW is one of Switzerland’s largest multidisciplinary universities of applied sciences, with over 13,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff.

The Department of Life Sciences and Facility Management (LSFM) is located in Wädenswil on the left bank of Lake Zurich. It teaches and conducts research in the fields of environment, nutrition / food, health and society.

The Institute of Facility Management (IFM) offers a Bachelor's (BSc) and a Master's (MSc) programme in Facility Management as well as a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) at the continuing education level. In addition, it offers the possibility of doctoral studies together with international partner universities. The Institute's strategic research focuses on "Sustainability in FM", "FM Digital", "Workplace Management" and "FM in Health Care".

The IFM, in cooperation with NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), is looking for two outstanding candidates, starting in February 2021, as Research Assistants in Real Estate and Facility Management 100 %

within an international joint research project on campus development.

The research assistants will work on ZHAW’s research project “Innovative Campus Solutions”, which involves the research groups “Workplace Management” and “Real Estate Management” of the IFM. The project covers research topics such as workplace management, strategic space management, and campus development. The ZHAW research project “Innovative Campus Solutions” is an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional project operating in cooperation with NTNU. The overall aim of the campus projects is to develop campus strategies that reflect recent changes and trends in the academic world, such as emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration or new forms of teaching and learning.

The research assistants are expected to enroll in NTNU’s PhD program. They will be jointly supervised by distinguished academics from both universities and will work in Wädenswil, Switzerland.

One of the research assistants will investigate how academic workplaces can be designed and managed to promote innovation, research, teaching, and collaboration across disciplines. The other research assistant will study how learning environments can be retrofitted to accommodate new forms of teaching and learning and to increase learning success, comfort and well-being. The specific research focus and research design will be developed in accordance with the Swiss and Norwegian research groups.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting applied research in the field of Campus Development which includes qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
  • Development of theoretically and empirically founded strategies to innovative Campus Development
  • Application of the developed understanding to client projects
  • Engagement as a member of the Workplace Management research group at the IFM
  • Academic mobility to promote exchange with the research group at the NTNU (Centre for Real Estate and Facilities Management at the Department of Architecture and Planning)


  • Excellent M.Sc. degree in Facility Management, Real Estate, Architecture, relevant Social Sciences, or another related field of study of 120 ECTS.
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Experience in conducting applied research on built environments
  • Proficiency in German and English (oral and written)
  • Admission to the PhD program at NTNU The position is limited to three years with a possibility of extension
