2 PhD positions in Combustion Dynamics of Hydrogen Flames in Gas Turbines 100 %

Play an important part in the decarbonization of the future energy system by working on combustion dynamics of hydrogen flames in gas turbines within an international European research consortium and industry partners.

Starting date: 1st project: Nov 1st 2022 (latest February 1st 2023) for 36 months / 2nd project: Feb 1st 2023 (latest August 1st 2023) for 36 months

Your role

  • Investigation of thermoacoustic fundamentals of hydrogen flames
  • Derivation of flame transfer matrices for propagation- and autoignition stabilized hydrogen flames
  • CFD and thermoacoustic network modelling of lab-scale and full-scale setups
  • Application of system identification techniques and analytical modelling strategies
  • Data processing & thermoacoustic network modelling of lab-scale and full-scale setups
  • Definition and design of required mitigation measures
  • Communication of research results through international conferences and peer-reviewed publications

Your profile

  • Master's degree in engineering, physics or applied math
  • Strong background in at least one of the following: fluid dynamics, acoustics, combustion, control theory, experiments
  • Excellent command of the German a/o English language (oral and written)
  • Proficient user of Matlab, Python or similar for modelling and data processing
  • Curious, scientific mindset and eager to learn new things

Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW is one of Switzerland's largest multidisciplinary universities of applied sciences, with over 14'000 students and 3'400 faculty and staff.

The Research Group Distributed Energy Systems focusses on analyzing dynamic systems, combustion of alternative, CO2-free fuels as well as thermo- and aeroacoustics of energy systems in the power and transport sector.

In the 1st project, the work will be performed in close collaboration with Ansaldo Energia Switzerland with the possibility to get strong insight into industrial development processes.

In the 2nd project, the position is part of a joint collaboration project (Horizon Europe) with Ansaldo Energia (CH and IT), ARTTIC (DE), CERFACS (FR), DLR (DE), Edison (IT), ETN (BE), Sintef (NO), and IEFE ZHAW (CH).

The PhD title can be obtained either from ETH Zurich or NTNU Trondheim fulfilling the respective requirements.
