For an SNF-NRF collaboration project with the University of Pretoria in South Africa called ?EBDOmics", the EGSB group is looking for a PhD student in Genomics and Bioinformatics.

Your project will investigate the causative agents of the plant disease Enterobacter bulb decay of onions. The aim is to study taxonomy and genomic diversity of the different organisms in the Enterobacter cloacae complex that can cause the disease, in order to design novel diagnostic methods and to study the molecular base of host-specificity of the individual members. Your work will combine molecular microbiology, MALDI-TOF MS identification, genome sequencing, comparative and functional genomics and innovative computer analyses. You are expected to actively shape the direction of your project and should be highly motivated, creative and curious. Your research could make a significant boost towards rapid identification and understanding of this plant pathogen. You are expected to publish your data in scientific publications, and you will participate in the collaborative aspects with different teams in South Africa.
- Completed MSc in Biology or Genetics and first experience in the fields of microbiology, genetics and genomics
- Advanced skills in molecular biology (DNA/RNA isolation, RT-(q)PCR)
- Theoretical and practical experience with NGS, bioinformatics, statistics and/or modeling
- Fluent command of English (both written and spoken)
- Knowledge of German is beneficial

The Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) research group is part of the interdisciplinary Institute of Natural Resource Sciences. We apply molecular biological methods in order to understand organisms and how they interact with the environment. Our labs are fully equipped for microbiology, genetics and genomics while bioinformatics infrastructure is available.
The doctorate is awarded at the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology of the Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich. The research will mainly be carried out at ZHAW in Wädenswil (www.zhaw.ch/iunr). Remuneration is based on the SNSF doctoral student rate.
