Master degree in Applied Psychology

The ZHAW School of Applied Psychology has start its first consecutive Master degree course in autumn 2008.

The Master degree can be done full-time or part-time in one of the following three specialist fields: clinical psychology, developmental and personality psychology or industrial and organisational psychology.

As a full-time course, the Master degree lasts four semesters and earns a total of 120 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). Thirty hours of work are required to earn one ECTS credit. Students who successfully finish the course earn a Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Psychology. This degree is recognised by the Swiss Confederation and in the rest of Europe.

A bachelor degree in psychology from a university of applied sciences or a university or comparable institution is required for admission to the Master course. Transfer courses for students from fields of study closely related to psychology are currently under negotiation. Applicants must also pass an aptitude test carried out in the form of an individual assessment session.

The Master course has been designed to train students to become specialised generalists with broad, science-based specialist and methodological skills and well-developed personal and social skills. The Master course prepares students to carry out advanced research, in particular as regards the testing of the efficiency of psychosocial intervention. The high percentage of project work, field research, public work and network-related activities means that students receive practical training that is geared to the special status of applied psychology at the level of a university of applied sciences. Professionals are currently predicting that the Master degree will soon become the new standard for most professions in the field of psychology.

By offering training in four specialist fields, the ZHAW School of Applied Psychology is the only university of applied sciences in the German-speaking area that guarantees training in all psychological professions that are relevant to the practice. Students who successfully finish this course are equipped to work in the fields of health, the economy and administration, education, culture, and the leisure industry. The Master course also trains them to become self-employed professionals in areas relevant to the health sector. A Master degree offers students access to a number of further education courses and specialist titles in the field of psychology, such as psychotherapy, child and youth psychology, emergency psychology, sport psychology, management, change management, organisational development, coaching and others.
